The beginnings and core of the Schloss Vollrads complex was a residential tower surrounded by a pond. This residential tower was built in 1330 by Friedrich Greiffenclau zu Vollrads. Since that time, Schloss Vollrads has been the family headquarters. In the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, members of the Greiffenclau family were archbishops and electors of Trier and Mainz, or prince-bishops of Würzburg. The baroque manor house was built in 1684 and modernized in 1907/1908. In the 19th century the family name threatened to become extinct as there were no longer any male descendants. The last Greiffenclau daughter Sophia married the Silesian Count Hugo Matuschka. Since then, the family name has been Matuschka-Greiffenclau through the name association. After the death of the last Count Erwein Matuschka-Greiffenclau in 1997, the estate with the Schloss Vollrads winery, the estate restaurant and the event area was run as an independent company.
