The Godel, Föhr's only freshwater river, rises in the salt marshes and meanders for about 1.5 km until it flows into the North Sea at Witsum. The importance of the Godel lowlands for flora and fauna is undisputed. The areas are particularly important as breeding and resting areas.
In consultation with the municipalities, the BUND - Inselgruppe Föhr ensures the protection of this important part of the landscape with its flora and fauna and has received the official care mandate from the state of Schleswig-Holstein since December 2016.
This protection is necessary, because it is a unique and worthwhile spectacle when the migratory birds make stops on Föhr - in the Godel Lowlands - on their journeys, some of which extend from Scandinavia to South Africa, in order to eat up fat reserves.
To protect it from human dangers, the mouth area of the Godel with its sand hook is calmed by rows of posts. For the Godel lowlands themselves, a maintenance and development concept is being developed together with the residents. This offers protection to endangered species and includes the people affected there (especially those from agriculture).
