The Ratzeburg Cathedral is an outstanding testimony of Romanesque brick architecture in northern Germany. The construction, begun by Henry the Lion around 1165, was completed in 1220 and continues to shape the silhouette of the island town. The cathedral and the subsequent cathedral cloister have impressive artistic treasures, including the medieval choir stalls, the early Gothic triumphal cross (around 1260), the Passion relief in the winged altar (1420) and the carved Renaissance pulpit (1576). In the courtyard of the monastery Ernst Barlach's bronze figure of the beggar can be admired on crutches and on the gable of the southern transept the "Ratzeburger Kegelspiel" tells a legend from Ratzeburg's eventful history.
The Ratzeburg Cathedral is an absolute highlight and highly recommended.
