Yes, that's right: Wipperfürth has been allowed to call itself an official Hanseatic city since 2012! The city owes this addition to its location on the river "Wupper", which is also called "Wipper" at the headwaters in the east. Further south, the Wupper at Leverkusen empties into the Rhine and is thus connected to the important, large waters and Hanseatic cities. In the 14th century Wipperfürth was a member of the Hanseatic League and attracted merchants from major cities such as Lübeck, Stockholm and Malmö. Even today, the nearby waters make the charm of the Oberbergi city: on foot via the "home" reach the Neytalsperre or further north the Bevertalsperre. In the latter one may also swim and do water sports, the Neyetalsperre purely serves as a drinking water reservoir.
