The monastery ruins can be visited from the inside. Please inform yourself in advance about the opening hours, so that you do not stand in front of locked gates.

After a big fire in 1038 the new building began, the collegiate church was built. In 1761, during the retreat, the French army burned down their supplies stacked in the collegiate church. One of the largest sacral hall buildings in Germany went up in flames and was almost completely destroyed. The Katharinenturm houses today only one bell: the Lullusglocke. It comes, as the inscription proves, from the year 1038 and is thus Germany's oldest cast bell.

Ruins of the collegiate church of the former abbey Hersfeld: the building dates back to a hermitage dating back to 736 and was expanded in the following years to Benedictine monastery and monastery church - in the Seven Years' War (1761), it was largely destroyed.
