Before the tourists (since 1954) were transported by cable car to Niederwalddenkmal, this made from 1884 to 1944 a rack railway, powered by the SAAR, a Dampflock with 360 hp.
Today, the tracks are dismantled, but the route and a bridge still bear witness to the route through the vineyards.

On this ascent, the old cogwheel trains used to go up to the Niederwald every 20 minutes. The route was 2.3 km long, the slope was about 103 per thousand.

Where the cog railway used to be, today there is a beautiful hiking trail right next to the vineyards. And don't forget the great view you have from here.
