The lake is located in the western Dolomites on the edge of the Latemarwald, just 20 kilometers southeast of Bolzano at 1520 m altitude in the municipality Welschnofen. The nearest settlement is Karersee. The approximately 300 m long and 140 m wide waters are fed by underground springs from the Latemargebirgszug. Depth and size of the lake are noticeably seasonal and weather dependent, the largest depth is given with about 22 m. In winter, the lake is sometimes visited by divers who make their dives under a thick layer of ice and record the underwater play of colors in documentary films. The small mountain lake is especially famous for its deep green water and the mountain backdrop that rises above the surrounding forest with the Latemar group in the south and the rose garden in the northeast as background. Around the lake are many South Tyrolean legends and numerous painters and writers chose the motif for their paintings or stories.
