A beautiful spot on the hiking trail between Friederichsbrunn and the Bremen Pond. The stones appear as if they were stacked by hand and have a special appeal as a photo motif. The Harzer Wandernadel has set up a stamp office here.

The large and the small Teufelslmühle are two wildly piled rock groups made of granite. The official natural monuments mark the southwest flank of the Viktorshöhe, which is 581.5 m above sea level. NHN are the second highest elevation of the Harz Ramberg. Here you can get stamp number 189 for the collectors of the HWN. There is a bench in front of the boulder that invites you to rest and the children can climb a bit.

What are the typical hiking durations to reach Große Teufelsmühle from nearby starting points?

The duration of your hike to Große Teufelsmühle depends on your starting point and pace. From Friedrichsbrunn, a popular starting point for the Harzer Ramberg circular trail, a round trip typically takes a few hours, allowing ample time to explore the monument and enjoy the forest. Many routes connect it with other points of interest, so total hike times can vary.

Are dogs allowed on the trails leading to Große Teufelsmühle, and are there any specific considerations for pet owners?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the hiking trails in the Harz Mountains, including those leading to Große Teufelsmühle. What are the parking options available for visitors to Große Teufelsmühle?

While the intro mentions accessibility, specific parking details are important. Always check local signage for designated parking areas and any potential fees.

What are the public transport options for reaching the Große Teufelsmühle area?

Public transport options to the immediate vicinity of Große Teufelsmühle are limited, as it's located within a natural area. Planning your journey in advance with local transport schedules is recommended.

How does the Große Teufelsmühle's unique geology, known as 'Wollsackverwitterung', form?

The Große Teufelsmühle exhibits a geological phenomenon called 'Wollsackverwitterung' or spheroidal weathering. This occurs when granite, composed of feldspar, mica, and quartz, is exposed to chemical and physical weathering processes over millions of years. Water penetrates cracks, causing the rock to decompose from the outside in, forming rounded, stacked blocks that resemble pillows or sacks of wool. This process is typical for granite formations in the Harz.

Are there any other notable natural landmarks or Harzer Wandernadel stamping points nearby?

Yes, a short distance away, about 100 to 150 meters to the northeast, you can find the Kleine Teufelsmühle, another similar rock formation. Additionally, the Große Teufelsmühle (HWN 189) connects to other Harzer Wandernadel points, such as the Bergrat-Müller-Teich (HWN 190), allowing for extended explorations and stamp collecting.

What are the conditions like for winter hiking to Große Teufelsmühle, and what gear is recommended?

Winter visits to Große Teufelsmühle can be magical, but conditions may require appropriate gear. Trails can be snowy or icy, so sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip are essential. Always check local weather and trail conditions before heading out.

How crowded does Große Teufelsmühle (Harzer Wandernadel 189) get, especially on weekends or holidays?

If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon, or during weekdays outside of peak seasons.

Are there any cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options directly near Große Teufelsmühle?

Große Teufelsmühle is a natural monument located within a forest, so there are no direct cafes, restaurants, or accommodation facilities at the site itself. However, the nearby town of Friedrichsbrunn offers various options for dining and lodging, ranging from guesthouses to hotels, where you can find refreshments and a place to stay before or after your hike.

What is the legend behind the name 'Große Teufelsmühle' (Great Devil's Mill)?

The distinctive shape of the rocks has given rise to a local legend. The tale tells of a miller who made a pact with the devil to build a mill overnight on the Ramberg. Fearing the devil, the miller removed a crucial stone just before completion. Enraged, the devil destroyed the mill and killed the miller with one of the boulders, thus forming the 'Devil's Mill' rocks.
