In the middle of Berlin you are standing on one of the few natural elevations in the capital, the 66 meter high Kreuzberg. It belongs to the Teltow plateau and forms the southern border of the Berlin glacial valley, which was created by the last ice age. The Viktoria waterfall flows down from it over some rocky cascades and forms a great photo motif that at first glance you would not necessarily associate with Berlin.

At its summit is a national monument dedicated to King Friedrich Wilhelm III. to commemorate the soldiers of the Prussian army who died in the wars of liberation from 1813 to 1815.

The hill, which is high by Berlin standards, measures a total of 66.1 meters - so the former vineyard is more than half as high as the highest natural point in the capital (Großer Müggelberg 114.7m). The Kreuzberg is home to the cast-iron national monument at its 'summit' commemorating the wars of liberation, such as the Battle of Waterloo.

The Kreuzberg lies in the middle of the idyllic Viktoriapark, which has been artificially created since 1888. This is particularly attractive thanks to its 24 meter high waterfall, which is based on the Zackelfall in the Giant Mountains. Furthermore, the park awaits with winding paths, a large playground, many green areas for lazing around and various catering options (X-Berg-Hütte & Golghata).

The easiest way to reach this highlight is with bus line 140, bus stop Katzbachstrasse/Kreuzbergstrasse (or Monumentenstrasse), which offers an ideal entry point at the foot of the Viktoriapark.

Via the side of the waterfall, the most beautiful side, we reach the Viktoriapark.
Unfortunately, the waterfall is over and we go up the mountain.
The street names in the area are reminiscent of the wars of liberation against Napoleonic France.
In memory of this time, the Kreuzberg was also designed with the national monument.
For us, both the park and the monument are one of the most beautiful places in Berlin.
We also have a wonderful view over part of the city from here.
All important battles were immortalized here.
Despite this, war is never to be viewed positively.
Unfortunately, everything here has been smeared over the years.

The place from which the district got its name is always worth a visit. Also recommended is the small cafe to the left behind the monument at the top. Unfortunately, the waterfall is without water at the moment, otherwise it is definitely beautifully designed.

In memory of the soldiers of the Prussian army who died in the Wars of Liberation from 1813 to 1815, King Friedrich Wilhelm III. from 1818 to 1821 erect the 18.83 meter high national monument for the Wars of Liberation on the Kreuzberg near Berlin. The neo-Gothic building is reminiscent of important battles; victories, but also defeats such as the battle at Großgörschen.

Verifiably one of the few natural surveys in Berlin.

There are a number of interesting stories surrounding the Kreuzberg. It is known to give its name to an entire district, although it was originally called Sandberg, Runder Weinberg and Tempelhofer Berg. Weinberg because vines had been growing on its southern slope since the 15th century. With the bitter frost of 1740, this tradition was broken for a whole 200 years! The Kreuz-Neroberger variety is now grown here, but you can only get it with a good connection to the Berlin Senate or sheer luck.

But how did the Kreuzberg get its name in the first place? This has to do with the national monument that has stood on the mountain since 1818 and commemorates the Napoleonic Wars that were victorious for Prussia, in particular the battles of Leipzig and Waterloo (Belle Alliance). This monument is decorated with a cross on the top and, when viewed from the air, it has a cross shape, and so the mountain was promptly renamed "Kreuzberg" as part of the monument's unveiling.

The monument is also a different story. Because the surrounding areas grew ever denser and higher in terms of development and the view of the tower became increasingly restricted, it was laboriously raised 8 meters up onto a pedestal during the imperial era and, at the same time, nicely aligned with the traffic axes (rotated by 21 degrees). This is why visitors now reverently climb a series of steps to the top.

Incidentally, the Berlin police had tried to keep the development in the area flat by issuing an order. One of the owners sued against this and won. The Prussian Higher Administrative Court found the police order invalid and, with the "Kreuzberg decision", as the judgment was called, permanently restricted the powers of the police authorities.

The sprawling Kreuzberg district is inhabited by students and artists and also has a large Turkish community. There are many Turkish restaurants around Kottbusser Tor, while the original Bergmannkiez is known for second-hand shops, cozy cafés and the landscaped Viktoriapark. In the alternative area near Görlitzer Park you can find street art, casual bars and food stalls in Markthalle Neun. The Landwehr Canal offers shady paths for walking, cycling and relaxing.

The Viktoriapark with the monument on the Kreuzberg and the waterfall is worth a visit at any time of the year. Even if no water flows in the winter months.

The monument is also interesting from a legal history perspective: in 1882, the Prussian Higher Administrative Court put the brakes on the administration, which was trying to prevent construction on the site based on a (vague) general police clause. A very important development in the rule of law.
