The original purpose of the Diemel Reservoir – in conjunction with the Eder Reservoir – was to balance the water levels of the Weser and the Mittelland Canal. This was intended to improve shipping conditions on the Upper Weser. Since 1960, the primary focus has been on balancing the Upper Weser.

The approximately 42-meter-high dam, completed in 1924, and the power plant building are now listed as historical monuments. The view of the dam is impressive.

The dam is also considered one of the Sauerland's spiritual places. It symbolizes the theme of "power and strength."

From the dam you look south over the forest-lined Diemelsee and north to the power plant building deep below you. There the Diemel continues its journey through the Diemeltal.
