There is a small pond next to the Rems, directly on the cycle path. Many sea turtles live in this. On sunny days, the turtles gather on rocks or floating logs. You can sometimes get up to two meters to the animals. There is also a bench in front of the pond to observe everything in peace.
In autumn you have to be lucky to see them. And in winter they hibernate.

    Najczęściej zadawane pytania

What kind of turtles can be observed at Schildkrötenteich?

The Schildkrötenteich is specifically designed for water and marsh turtles. While the exact species can vary, it's typically home to species like the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) and other similar aquatic turtles. The pond's features, such as shallow basking areas and a deep overwintering zone, cater to their specific needs.

Are there specific trails or walking routes around Schildkrötenteich?

While there isn't a dedicated 'Schildkrötenteich trail' per se, the pond is located directly on the popular Rems Cycle Path. This path offers excellent opportunities for walking and cycling. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the river, incorporating the turtle pond as a peaceful stop, or extend your walk along the scenic Rems river in either direction.

How long does it typically take to walk around Schildkrötenteich?

The Schildkrötenteich itself is a small pond, so walking around it directly would only take a few minutes. However, most visitors combine their visit with a longer walk or cycle along the adjacent Rems Cycle Path. You could easily spend 30 minutes to an hour observing the turtles and enjoying the peaceful setting, or much longer if you're exploring the wider area.

Is Schildkrötenteich suitable for a winter hike, or are there seasonal considerations?

While you can certainly hike along the Rems Cycle Path in winter, observing turtles at Schildkrötenteich during this season is highly unlikely. The turtles hibernate in the deeper sections of the pond during colder months. For optimal turtle spotting, it's best to visit on warm, sunny days from spring through early autumn when they are most active and visible, basking on rocks and logs.

What are the parking options near Schildkrötenteich?

For visitors arriving by car, the Round sports hall in Waiblingen is an ideal starting point. It offers plenty of free parking spaces and is conveniently located for accessing the Rems Cycle Path and the turtle pond.

Is Schildkrötenteich family-friendly, and are there specific activities for children?

Yes, Schildkrötenteich is very family-friendly. Children especially enjoy the unique opportunity to observe the turtles up close in their natural-like habitat. There's a bench available for comfortable viewing, making it a peaceful spot for families to relax and connect with nature. It's a great educational experience for all ages.

Are dogs allowed at Schildkrötenteich or on the surrounding trails?

Dogs are generally welcome on the public paths and the Rems Cycle Path surrounding Schildkrötenteich. However, please ensure your dog is kept on a leash and that you clean up after them. It's important to respect the wildlife and other visitors by keeping pets under control, especially near the pond where turtles are present.

Are there any cafes or pubs nearby Schildkrötenteich for refreshments?

While there isn't a cafe directly at the Schildkrötenteich, its location near Waiblingen and along the Rems Cycle Path means you'll find various dining options within a short distance. Waiblingen town center offers a selection of cafes, restaurants, and pubs where you can enjoy refreshments before or after your visit.

What natural features, besides the turtles, can be observed at Schildkrötenteich?

Beyond the fascinating turtles, the pond itself is a carefully designed ecosystem. You can observe various aquatic plants like hornwort, sweet flag, and water irises, which contribute to the pond's health and provide cover. The surrounding Rems river landscape also offers opportunities to spot other local flora and fauna, making it a pleasant natural environment.

What is the elevation of Schildkrötenteich, and does it impact hiking difficulty?

Schildkrötenteich is located at an elevation of 223 meters. The area immediately around the pond and along the Rems Cycle Path is generally flat, making it very accessible and suitable for all fitness levels. There are no significant elevation changes that would impact hiking or cycling difficulty in this specific area.

Can I go wild swimming in Schildkrötenteich?

No, wild swimming is not permitted in Schildkrötenteich. This is an artificial pond specifically designed as a habitat for water and marsh turtles, not for human recreation. Entering the water could disturb the turtles and their delicate ecosystem. Please respect the purpose of this unique wildlife sanctuary.
