MUSEUM HARBOR: The "Stichting Historische Haven Leiden" (SHHL) was founded in 1984 and is located at Kort Galgewater 50. Privately owned historic ships (mostly from the late 19th century) are restored to their original condition, and the Galgewater provides moorings for these vessels. In the museum harbor, you can find and admire them all in one place. All ships still sail annually at the naval review during the celebrations on October 3rd commemorating the liberation of Leiden.

HISTORY: Most of the ships in the harbor date back to the late 19th century. At that time, seafaring dominated inland trade. The Netherlands boasted a unique variety of ship types, designed for the transport of various bulk goods and adapted to specific waterways. The first motor ships appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, and from around 1950 onward, brown sails, masts, and boatmen hustling on the towpaths were no longer to be seen. This marked the end of this form of freight transport on Dutch waters.
