The village of Resen is today located in the municipality of Bosilegrad, within Serbia. However, its cemetery remains on Bulgarian territory, in the Kyustendil region. This unusual situation is a result of the Treaty of Neuilly in 1919, when, after World War I, the new border between Bulgaria and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was drawn in a way that cut through the village's land. Thus, the people's homes fell into Serbia, while their old cemetery remained on the Bulgarian side of the border - a symbol of the artificially divided lives of the local population.
