On the elevated bank of the Gzhat River, not far from the city center, there is a temple complex formed in the 18th-19th centuries. The dominant building of the ensemble is the Annunciation Cathedral, which today houses a local history museum. This large brick building on a granite base was erected in 1897-1900 in the pseudo-Russian style on the site of a cathedral built back in 1735-1736. To the north of the Annunciation Cathedral there are two more churches - the Church of the Sorrowful Mother of God (Mary of Egypt) (1753) and Tikhvin (1841, built in the forms of late classicism. The original Annunciation Cathedral was built in 1735-36, in 1753 a little to the north a warm two-altar Church of Our Lady of Sorrow (Mary of Egypt) was built. In 1841, a new warm Tikhvin Church was built on the eastern side close to it, adjoining the altar of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrow with the northern part of the western facade, after which a sacristy and a library were arranged in the old, dilapidated one. In 1896, the old cathedral was dismantled and in its place in 1897-1900, with funds from a local patron of the arts, the manufacturer A.I. Komarova, a new one was built the large building of the Annunciation Cathedral, which dominates the complex. All the temples are brick and plastered.
