The hike to Mount Sherrill's summit is generally considered moderate to difficult, primarily due to its trailless nature and significant elevation gain. Hikers will encounter steep sections, false summits, and large boulder fields, some with rocks measuring 10-20 feet in diameter. The terrain requires careful footing and good physical conditioning.

Dogs are generally permitted in the Westkill Mountain Wilderness Area of Catskill State Park, which includes Mount Sherrill. However, given the mountain's challenging, trailless terrain, steep sections, and large boulder fields, it's crucial to assess your dog's fitness and agility. Summer and fall offer lush foliage but can have dense undergrowth, making bushwhacking more difficult. Winter ascents often provide clearer, breathtaking views due to leafless trees, but they also introduce significant challenges like snow, ice, and colder temperatures, requiring specialized gear such as snowshoes, microspikes, and appropriate winter clothing.

However, nearby towns in the Catskills, such as Phoenicia, Hunter, or Tannersville, offer various options for cafes, pubs, restaurants, and accommodation. It's advisable to plan your post-hike refreshments or overnight stays in these surrounding communities.

As part of the Catskill Mountains wilderness, Mount Sherrill is home to diverse wildlife. Hikers might encounter white-tailed deer, black bears, various bird species, and smaller mammals. It's important to practice Leave No Trace principles, store food properly to avoid attracting bears, and observe wildlife from a respectful distance.
