Dvigrad was once one of the most important trading centers in northern Istria. From the city, which was flourished in the Middle Ages, only ivy-covered walls are left.
In the 9th century AD. Dvigrad was first mentioned.
The upswing ended abruptly as Dvigrad was affected by war and disease over the centuries.
When malaria broke out in the 17th century, only about 10 percent of the approximately 700 inhabitants survived this epidemic and then left the city.
From the city remained nothing but about 200 houses ruins and the ruins of the Basilica of St. Sophie.

Picturesque, abandoned village amidst lush vegitation. Around the year 1000 two castles were built here on neighboring hills and later fenced with an oval wall. The result was a village with about 1000 inhabitants, which was abandoned in the 17th century after a malaria epidemic.
In front of the complex is a small kiosk, which was opened around 10:00 clock.
