Jiufen Old Street is characterized by a labyrinth of narrow alleys, cobblestone paths, and numerous steep stone steps that wind up and down the mountainside. While the paths are generally well-maintained, the uneven surfaces and inclines mean that comfortable, sturdy footwear is highly recommended for all visitors.
While Jiufen Old Street itself is a walking experience, there are several trails in the surrounding area. The Teapot Mountain Trail and the Keelung Mountain Trail offer more strenuous hikes with panoramic views of the coast and the village. For a less challenging option, the Jinguashi Gold Ecological Park, a short bus ride away, has historical sites and walking paths.
Jiufen Old Street can be challenging for families with very young children due to its steep steps, narrow passages, and often crowded conditions. Strollers are generally not practical. However, older children will likely enjoy the bustling atmosphere, unique shops, and diverse street food. Many teahouses and cafes offer a chance to rest and enjoy the views.
Unfortunately, Jiufen Old Street is not easily accessible for visitors using wheelchairs or those with limited mobility. The historic layout features numerous steep, uneven stone steps and narrow, winding alleys, making navigation very difficult. Some sections may have ramps, but a full exploration of the area would be challenging.
The most common public transport options from Taipei include taking a train to Ruifang Station and then transferring to a local bus (e.g., bus 788 or 1062) directly to Jiufen Old Street. Alternatively, several direct bus routes, such as bus 1062 from Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT Station, offer a convenient way to reach Jiufen without transfers.
To fully experience Jiufen Old Street, including sampling street food, browsing shops, visiting a teahouse, and soaking in the atmosphere, it's recommended to allocate at least 3 to 4 hours. Many visitors choose to stay into the evening to witness the magical glow of the red lanterns.
Jiufen is famous for its culinary delights. Must-try items include taro balls (芋圓), which are chewy and often served with sweet soup, peanut ice cream rolls, various types of fish balls, pork dumplings, and Taiwanese sausages. Traditional tea ceremonies at one of the many teahouses are also a quintessential experience.
Beyond the bustling main street, look for the iconic Amei Teahouse, often associated with Studio Ghibli's 'Spirited Away,' and the historic Shengping Theater, which offers a glimpse into Jiufen's past. Exploring the smaller, quieter side alleys can also reveal charming traditional architecture and unique viewpoints away from the crowds.
Jiufen Old Street is known for its steep, winding alleys, historical architecture, and panoramic ocean views, offering a more immersive cultural and culinary experience. Shifen Old Street, while also charming, is flatter and famous for its railway tracks running through the market and its proximity to the stunning Shifen Waterfall, making it more focused on natural scenery and the unique experience of releasing sky lanterns.
To avoid the largest crowds, especially on weekends and public holidays, it's best to visit Jiufen Old Street early in the morning, shortly after shops begin to open (around 9-10 AM), or later in the afternoon on weekdays. The evening, while magical with the lanterns, is often the busiest period.
While there isn't a strict ban on dogs, navigating Jiufen Old Street with a dog can be challenging due to the narrow, crowded alleys and steep steps. Many indoor establishments, such as teahouses and some shops, may not permit pets. It's advisable to keep dogs on a leash and be mindful of other visitors.
