The church was founded in 1861 by entrepreneur Lothar von Faber to mark the centenary of his flourishing pencil company. In return, he and his descendants were granted the right of patronage. The church was designed by building officer Bernhard Solger according to the guidelines of the Eisenach regulations and was inaugurated on September 1, 1861. It is a neo-Gothic hall church made of sandstone blocks with a retracted choir with a 5⁄8 end, with a gable roof and a southern central tower with a tent roof
