Among the buildings of the first phase of Romanesque architecture in Sardinia is the small church of Santa Maria di Palmas (Location Palmas near the SS 195, shortly after the bridge over the Palmas stream), mentioned for the first time in documentary sources in 1066 , when the judge of Càlari Orzocco-Torcotorio I de Lacon-Gunale donated it to the Cassinesi monks, together with five other titles, including the nearby church of Santa Marta in Villarios.
The construction of the building is usually traced back to the first decades of the 11th century, probably to the first twenty years.
