The round tower in the northwestern corner of the first bailey was built at the turn of the 15th to 16th century. In peacetime, it served as residential and work quarters, while during the war it became a defense building against early firearms. After the Livonian War (1558-1583), the owners of the castle abandoned the tower. Fire, rairt, snow and cold transformed it into scenic ruins. In 2019, the tower was covered in wooden scaffolding to allow restorers to carry out the gradual conservation of the 500-year-old walls.

The castle was started as Wenden Castle by the Teutonic Knights of the Order of the Brothers of the Sword after 1212. The stone castle, including three outer castles, served as the residence of the Livonian land masters of the Teutonic Order between 1237 and 1561. It was one of their main headquarters.
