The Church of Saint-Étienne de la Cité is one of the oldest churches in Périgueux, located in the old district of the Cité Vesunna, the historic heart of the city during the Gallo-Roman era. It is an exceptional witness to the religious and architectural history of the region, with a style that combines Romanesque and Gothic influences.

History and architecture:

The church dates from the 12th century and served as a cathedral until the 16th century, before this honor went to the Cathedral of Saint-Front. Its structure bears witness to the architectural evolution, with a massive Romanesque nave, sculpted capitals and a vaulted apse in a cul-de-four, characteristics of the Romanesque style.
After being partially destroyed during the Wars of Religion, the church was restored several times, preserving a unique blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles.

This magnificent church (it was the cathedral until the end of the 17th century, since then see komoot.com/de-de/highlight/165495 ) in Périgueux was dedicated to the patronage of "Saint-ETIENNE". He was one of the first seven deacons of the original Jerusalem community and, according to the biblical accounts in the "New Testament", was also the first martyr (martyr) of early Christianity. The church commemorates his death on the second day of Christmas, December 26th.
As the Acts of the Apostles report: When Stephen expressed his vision of the open heavens "But he, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Chapter 7, Verse 55), the people were so outraged that they drove him out of the city and stoned him.
