The first central station in Luxembourg City was put into operation in 1859. For military reasons, the station was initially built of wood. Between 1907 and 1913, the half-timbered construction was gradually replaced by the current building according to plans by the German architects Rüdell, Jüsgen and Scheuffel. The monumental main building and the high clock tower were built in the Moselan Baroque style. In the station hall there is a stained glass window with the silhouette of the city of Luxembourg; the ceiling of the hall was redesigned in 1994 by the Luxembourg artist Armand Strainchamps.

Luxembourg's train station is architecturally very stylish, but unfortunately, like many train stations in Europe, it's completely run-down. Bearded men stand around the station, either shouting or selling things. The security team, which unlike in Germany consists of tall, athletic young men, is very vigilant and even during police checks, three of them stand with the officers. Not the best place in Luxembourg.
