The main religious building of Oman, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos ibn Sa'id ibn Taimur al-Sa'id opened it with all its pomp in May 2001. The construction of the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, whose area covers 416 thousand square meters, took place between 1995 and 2001. The tabernacle itself, standing according to the Omani tradition on a raised platform above the surroundings, has an area of 40,000 square meters and, in addition to a library for 20,000 titles, houses a giant prayer hall.
