The Ambachtal Bridge became known nationwide through the kidnapping of the businessman and show jumper Hendrik Snoek. The managing director of the Ratio supermarket was kidnapped from his home in Münster on November 3, 1976 by two assailants and chained up in a hollow space 52 meters high in one of the bridge's pillars. Two days later, Snoek managed to throw scraps of paper down through an opening in the concrete wall. An employee of the city of Herborn noticed this and called the police. They found the kidnapped man's hiding place and freed him. In 1978, the Münster district court sentenced one of the kidnappers to 13 years in prison.
