In the Lower Rhine region, the veneration of the Apostle Matthias is very much alive. Every year, the Matthias Brotherhoods (SMB) make pilgrimages to Trier in their parishes and erect corresponding pilgrimage markers in their home parishes and along the way in the Eifel region.

The memorial stone stands in front of the Catholic Church of St. Mary's Assumption at Waldnieler Heide 24 in Hostert.
Everywhere on the Lower Rhine, but especially in the Eifel, you can find around 200 of these stones, steles, pilgrim crosses of the St. Matthias brotherhoods, which they erected on their way to St. Matthias in Trier. Some are hundreds of years old. The main pilgrimage season is between the Ascension Day and Pentecost, when the brotherhoods travel with thousands of pilgrims on foot. They usually use ancient pilgrimage routes.
