The Matthias figure in the chapel was created by the sculptor Josef Wirth (*07/05/1902 in Mönchengladbach, +10/30/1934 in the St. Antonius-Hospital Waldniel). "His whole life was devoted to religious art," says his obituary. He also designed the wooden signpost in front of the Hotel Lindenhof in the center of Hardt.

Everywhere on the Lower Rhine, on the Middle Rhine, but especially in the Eifel, you can find around 200 of these pilgrim symbols from the St. Matthias brotherhoods. They can be stelae, crosses, wayside shrines, stones or small chapels. The brotherhoods set them up on their way to St. Matthias in Trier. Some pilgrim signs are several hundred years old. The main pilgrimage season is the time between Ascension Day and Pentecost every year, when the brotherhoods travel with thousands of pilgrims on foot. They usually use ancient pilgrimage roads, some of which are Roman roads.

In 1881 the St. Mathiasbruderschaft Hardt built a chapel on Hardter Landstrasse, which is actually more of a wayside shrine or holy house. The Mathias Chapel is the starting and arrival point of the annual pilgrimage on foot to the grave of the Apostle Matthias in Trier.
