Now one of the most popular hiking trails in and around Juneau, this designated National Recreation Trail began its life as the first road in Alaska, connecting the mines and mills in this basin with the waters of the Gastineau Channel down below.

However, this trail's history goes back even further, as it was originally used by Alaska Native peoples for hunting and harvesting.

Nowadays this trail is a wonderfully social destination just a (relatively) short walk from the downtown cruise ship terminal. On a single hike here you may get to chat with amateur gold miners, cruise ship passengers, or knowledgeable locals, while also spotting birds, wildlife, and plentiful berries and wildflowers, depending on the season. Be aware that avalanche danger may continue through winter and early spring.

Perseverance Trail links into other old mining roads/trails, and also serves as the start of the hike up Mount Juneau. If you'd like some company in exploring this area, local guide companies offer guided trips to explore the basin and mining ruins.
