It would be pointless to speculate as to which of the characters in the novel created by the writer Alexandre DUMAS the Elder (1802 to 1870) achieved greater literary and cinematic fame:

=> "The Three Musketeers" (the ancient warriors Athos, Porthos and Aramis, joined by the young d'Artagnan)

or

=> Edmond Dantes, better known to many as the COUNT of MONTE CRISTO.

The – actually existing – prison island d'If off Marseille is one of the central locations in the first part of Dumas' story. Wrongly accused of a plot by a rival, Dantes, a young seafarer, disappears without trial behind the walls of this notorious prison for a long time. But the seemingly endless and torturous time is not in vain: through his acquaintance with another prisoner, Abbe Faria, he is taught extensively; and after his death, which enables him to escape, he attains immeasurable wealth. With the newly acquired title "Count of Monte Cristo" and his fortune, he blinds all enemies and profiteers from back then and devotes himself to a sophisticated revenge plan.

So here is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the writer's fantasy world during a visit to Chateau d'f and to walk in the footsteps of the fictional characters Edmond Dantes and Abbe Faria.

The former prison island is well known because of the novel "The Count of Monte Cristo" who was imprisoned here. Because of the Count, the island is now a tourist attraction. The seagulls have now taken over the island. I walked all the way around once, they didn't do anything to me.
The return boat trip costs €11.10, entry to the island €6.
