Bisket Jatra is an annual 10-day festival celebrating the start of the Nepali New Year. The festival starts and is held in Taumadhi Square (Ta:Maari). Chariots are pulled through the streets. Ultimately a tug of war over them determines who will be blessed with good fortune in the coming year.
At the Bhairavnath temple, a chariot used in the annual Bisket Jatra Festival is stored. Around the Nepali New Year per the Vikram Savat calendar - in March or April - the chariot is reassembled, and an image of Bhairav is installed within the chariot. At festival time, competing teams from the town's upper and lower quarters meet in the Taumadhi Square. The opposing teams compete in a grand tug-of-war contest to pull the chariot toward one or the other sides of town. As the chariot is tugged in opposite directions, it advances slowly along the streets according to whichever team is strongest. In the end, regardless of whichever side "wins," the chariot is ultimately moved to the Yahsikhyah square on the south side of Bhaktapur in time for New Year's Eve.
