The Cistercian convent Mariensee was founded in the 13th century. The residents ran agriculture, sold the products in Hanover and thus financed the construction of a sacred church. The monastery complex was destroyed due to war and a major fire, only the church was initially preserved. It was King George II who finally rebuilt the monastery in the style of the North German Baroque.
