Kloosterzande is located in the north of the municipality, near the Western Scheldt. It is actually a twin village consisting of the former centers of Kloosterzande and Groenendijk. After the monks of Ten Duinen from Koksyde (Belgium) established the Uithof Hof te Zande there, Kloosterzande developed around the former monastery farm.

Kloosterzande was founded by monks from the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Ten Duinen abbey in Koksijde, who founded a court in the 12th century, Hof te Zande. These monks played an important role in the dyke work in the land of Hulst. During the Eighty Years' War, the court was destroyed. The name of the village and of the central 'Cloosterstraat' refer to its history.
