The Minnesota Soaring Club -- mnsoaringclub.com -- is (the oldest?) active sailplane flying club in Minnesota. With over 60 active member pilots, a tow plane, three club gliders, and many private gliders, the MSC has nonstop operations all day Saturdays and Sundays (mornings prioritize student training flights) as well as many ad hoc weekday operations from May through October. Soaring in southeast Minnesota primarily involves finding and exploiting thermals developed over farm fields and townships, which can on a good day rise up to 8000 or more feet above the ground. Many members of the club are experienced cross-country pilots and have set numerous records for cross country flights, including the World Distance Award for cumulative cross-country flights equal to a distance circling the equator, or 40,000 kilometers. Members of the club have flown to Chicago from Stanton Airfield (without an engine, of course! (Jim Hard, flight of May 1, 1996, landing near Lowell, Indiana, just south and a bit east of Chicago. the Minnesota Soaring Club is Minnesota's largest soaring club stationed here at Stanton airfield. with about 60 active pilots and students. Operations run all day on weekends and selected weekdays throughout the spring summer and fall. visitors are welcome to come watch, learn about soaring, or take a ride with us.
