Patones de Arriba is a municipality in the Sierra Norte region of Madrid. Its historic center was declared a site of cultural interest for being one of the best preserved black towns. This type of architecture is characterized by the use of constructive elements in dark tones, such as slate.

At a confluence of streams hidden at the top of a hillside is the best preserved black town in Madrid. Patones de Arriba is part of a group of characteristic mountain towns shared by Madrid and Guadalajara where slate is the main construction element that gives the buildings a dark, almost black colour. These are known as "black towns". Its location has given it a strategic importance that its inhabitants have taken advantage of since the Iron Age, Romans, Visigoths, Muslims and Christians.
