Landwehr, Landgraben and Landhege refer to border marking or border security structures and enclosures of settlement areas with the right to enclose entire territories. These settlement protection systems are mostly dated to the High and Late Middle Ages and in individual cases are over a hundred kilometers long. However, comparable earthworks have been mentioned since ancient times.[1] The Roman Limes is the best-known version of an early Landwehr. The Danewerk also belongs to this group of barriers.
