In the immediate vicinity of the Royal Castle lies the Storkyrkan. Literally translated, her name means "the great church". Storkyrkan has been Stockholm Cathedral since 1942.

Stockholm Cathedral is the oldest church in Stockholm (13th century) dedicated to St. Nicolaus. The church has a Baroque brick character from the outside and a primarily Gothic interior. The church is closely connected to the Royal Family so that many Royal Weddings and Funerals took place there (e.g. the wedding between Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling in 2010). The wooden sculpture Saint George and the Dragon and the oil-on-panel painting Vädersolstavlan are worth visiting.

The facades and tower were converted into Baroque style in the 18th century because the medieval appearance was disturbing, next to the Baroque royal castle.
