    The city wall and the city gates were destroyed in 1629 during the Thirty Years' War and rebuilt in 1839 in its present form. While originally four city gates were present, today there is only the Mühlentor with its entrance and exit. The late Gothic gate was extensively renovated in 1998. In November 2007, after extensive renovation of the ramparts, a lighting system was put into operation.

    Sternberg was once the residence of the Mecklenburg Prince Henry II, called the Lion, and also gained importance as the venue of the Mecklenburg Urban Day. The city wall and the city gates of the town, which was granted town rights in 1248, were destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, but rebuilt in 1839 in their present form.

    Today, parts of the former city wall and the ramparts as well as of formerly four city gates still receive the Mühlentor, built in late Gothic form, which was extensively renovated in 1998.
