The Immaculate Conception Church is believed to be the oldest Catholic Church site between Dubuque, Iowa, and St. Paul, Minnesota. Inside the church, on the back wall, there is a framed port record on which lists all the Ticonderoga ship passengers who sailed from Liverpool, England to New Orleans in the winter of 1850. :This group of Irish immigrants constructed a small log church in 1851 under the direction of their pastor Father Thomas Hore. The current church building you see today was the third church at this location, completed in 1870.

The Parish of the Immaculate Conception in Wexford, Iowa, was established in 1851 by Thomas Hore, an Irish priest originally from Wexford County, Ireland. In response to the Irish Famine, Thomas Hore sailed with 1200 of his parishioners in 1850 from Ireland to the United States. While his flock remained in St. Louis, Missouri, Hore traveled up the Mississippi River to Allamakee County, Iowa, where he purchased over a thousand acres for a new settlement. In 1851 Thomas Hore and eighteen families came by steamship from St. Louis to Lafayette Landing near Wexford.
