Mathias Weber, known as "Fetzer", the son of a drunkard and a prostitute, was said to be hiding here. Fetzer's raids took him from Holland to the Middle Rhine. In 1802 he was finally caught in Frankfurt. He was found guilty of 180 burglaries and 2 murders and was sentenced to death and beheaded on February 19, 1803.

The cave itself dates back to 1562 when coal was dug there without success.
At the beginning of the 20th century there was an open-air stage around the cave (see pictures).
