Although its history is still poorly known, the founding of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys seems to be linked to the second wave of migration to Armorica. It was founded in the 6th century by Gildas, a monk from England (probably Wales, or Ireland). The abbey has been classified as a historic monument since 1840.
