The lookout is part of the Quedlinburg lookout and moat system and is located on one of the highest points (around 198 meters) of a sandstone ridge called the Altenburg.
The original lookout in the form of a round tower about five meters thick dates back to the 14th or 15th century. In 1889, the Harz Club built a new tower from the weathered remains, which, after several restorations, is now used as a ten-meter-high pentagonal observation tower with a spiral staircase, the platform of which can be reached via 51 steps.
