One of the most beautiful Marian grottoes in the region. The Sieg adventure trail "Erzquellweg" also leads along here. Just follow and drive up to the Giebelberg :)
The Marian grotto from 1924 was built into the rock on the south side of the so-called Mailey. This is located above an orchard and can be reached via the main path of the cemetery in Mudersbach.
The idea to build a Marian grotto came from Mrs. Elisabeth Mockenhaupt, née Webeler, * 14.09.1844 in Mudersbach. In 1924 the eldest son Albert started construction. The grotto was built into the rock on the south side of the Mailey at a height of 10 meters. The Mailey is located southeast of the former cattle pasture, above the orchard and can be reached via the main path of the cemetery. The stones for the construction of the grotto were brought with great effort by women, men and children from the Storch and Schöneberg Pit. These stones were unsuitable for smelting because they contained little ore and quartz. The facility was equipped with a prayer chair. Albert Mockenhaupt financed the cost of the complex and the statue of Mary as well as the shepherd child "Bernadette". At Pentecost 1925, the solemn inauguration with the blessing of the statue of "Our Lady of Lourdes" by Pastor Masson took place with lively participation of the population. Johannes Masson was born on December 5th, 1870 in Prüm and was pastor in Mudersbach from 1907 to 1925.
There are regular processions from the parish church to the grotto in Mudersbach, followed by prayer. In 1965 a new figure of the Virgin Mary, created by the Brachbach sculptor Josef Christ, who died in 1995 (honorary citizen of Brachbach), was inaugurated through donation campaigns. The path from the cemetery to Mailey was also inaugurated in 1965 as the station path of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The stations also came from Josef Christ's workshop. In 2007 a new Bernadette was inaugurated, donated by a citizen of Mudersbach.
