The hotel complex opened in 1971 and consisted of two hotels (one four-star, one five-star), several bungalows, and several restaurants. Recreational facilities such as a bowling alley, tennis courts, and mini-golf courses rounded out the luxury resort. Numerous celebrities and statesmen, such as Saddam Hussein and Olof Palme, were guests here.
By the early 1990s, the splendor had faded, and with the decline of wealthy guests, the complex became increasingly geared toward mass tourism. During the war, it was used as a refugee camp and eventually acquired by an investor—apparently—as a speculative investment.
