The Zonneberg is probably still known to some from the final of the Amstel Gold Race, when the finish was still in Maastricht. This steep climb (up to 19%) was more decisive. But at the bottom of the mountain is an extensive cave system, where guided tours are still given.
With the bike, however, the top gives a fantastic view over the Maas to the east. The church that can be seen at the bottom left is popularly called "Sint-Pieter boven". T.o. the church you can still see the castle where André Rieu lives.

You can visit the caves under the mountain for €9.50 (children: €7.95) or explore them on a guided tour.

Among other things, you get an insight into the use of the grottoes, such as: The Zonneberg grottoes are characterized by long corridors with very high ceilings (10 m from floor to ceiling), giving the grottoes a sacred impression. Many ancient texts can also be found on the walls of these caves. It is particularly interesting that the Zonneberg Caves were set up to provide space for 47,000 Maastricht citizens had they had to be evacuated from their homes during World War II. The individual areas, the bread ovens, the water pumps, the public communication space and the chapel are silent witnesses to this comprehensive logistical plan.
