This section of the North Sea Cycle Route (LF1 Noordzeeroute) from Scheveningen to Zandvoort is highly recommended as mentioned above. In addition, the towns Katwijk aan Zee and Noordwijk with their beach promenades invite for a pleasant break.

Berkheide is a 1700 ha. Dune area on the Dutch North Sea coast between Scheveningen and Katwijk. It is located mostly in the municipality of Wassenaar and forms together with Meijendel the Natura 2000 area Meijendel & Berkheide. For the owner Staatsbosbeheer it is part of the management unit Hollands Duin. Berkheide is also the name of a fishing village that has been in the area for several hundred years.

The Berkheide and Meijendel dune areas are home to an enormous diversity of plant and animal species due to the varied vegetation, moisture content, and lime content. This includes rare plants and herbs, as many as 250 bird species, a huge variety of insects, and even the sand lizard and the natterjack toad.
