St. Pauli was created as part of Soest's urban expansion. Each of the four newly created sectors was to have its own church. A St. Pauli church, mentioned in a document in 1229, was converted into today's Gothic church from 1350 onwards.

During the Reformation period, the first Reformation sermons were held in St. Pauli in Soest.

St. Pauli and St. Petri together form the St. Petri-Pauli community. You can find more information about St. Petri here: komoot.de/highlight/553011
