The absolutely impressive cathedral goes back to designs by Archbishop Willigis in 975. Since then, the church has been the victim of fires, lightning strikes and sieges. The cathedral has been rebuilt and renovated over the centuries. It contains features from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Anyone who is in Mainz should not miss a visit to this imposing building.

The High Cathedral of St. Martin in Mainz is the cathedral (bishop's church) of the Roman Catholic diocese of Mainz and is under the patronage of St. Martin of Tours. The east choir is dedicated to St. Stephan. The building, which belongs to the imperial domes, is in its present form a three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica, which has Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements in its additions.
