For an immense 33,000 Reichstaler, the 7.1 kilometer long main fen canal was finally completed in 1781. The construction of this then indispensable canal by the "Rhauderfehn Compagnie" took a full 11 years, which was decided a year earlier, namely in 1769, by Frederick the Great with the communities of Rhaude, Holte and the affected Sielachten. Since then, the tidal canal has connected Rhauderfehn via the Leda with the Hümmling, via the Jümme with the Cloppenburg and via the Ems with the North Sea and everything that follows the Ems to the south.
So it was a worthwhile undertaking that daring men decided over 250 years ago. Today the importance of the canal that gives the face between Ostrhauderfehn and the bird sanctuary on the Leda just before Amdorf seems to be rather minor. But that was not always the way you can now easily imagine.
For bike tours, the main Fehn Canal is a nice connection between the last-mentioned stations. The paths are well developed and therefore excellent for every bike. The route can be easily integrated into a "cradle tour" based on the topic.

The bird sanctuary "Polder Holter Hammrich" including the "Polder Leyßer Hammrich", as the official term is called, with its enormous 240 hectares of rewetted area is north of the Leda, bordering on the Leda, a dream landscape for cyclists and hikers that is rarely found.
The refuge for over 60 bird species, which can be accessed from 3 sides, is a popular excursion destination in the region with a circular route of 7 kilometers including a lookout tower.
The conversion of the relief polder was started on boggy ground and completed in 2011. The actual purpose of protection against flooding found its second meaning, which is so interesting for us and so necessary for the habitats of the birds, quite incidentally, in a natural way: bird protection.
You can come here from Leer past Amdorf, from Detern or Rhauderfehn via Holte and Holterfehn and on the other side from Collinghorst via Backemoor and Schatteburg on pleasant bike paths, or if necessary by car.
It is worth taking some time for the tour, binoculars and, if you are bringing a camera, a monopod as well. In addition to enjoying the enchanting nature, great animal observations are also possible. It is also worth absorbing the information on the various display boards. In any case, please do not leave the designated paths in favor of the quietness of the birds when breeding and whatever else they are up to. Your visit to the Holter and Leyßer Hammrich will be a unique nature experience that everyone will benefit from.
