The river was first documented in 904 as Muora in flumen. The meaning of the name is uncertain. It may derive from the Germanic word *mōra, meaning "swampy land," and originally referred to the surrounding area.

The Mur rises southeast of the Murtörl (2260 m) in the Schmalzgrube at an altitude of about 2050 m above sea level in the Ankogel group (in the Hohe Tauern National Park) in the Salzburg Lungau and drains this part of Salzburg at the beginning of the Mur-Mürz furrow as the upper Mur valley and the only body of water to the east, among other places through the Aichfeld.
