This magnificent building was once a spa.
The themes that this museum addresses are varied: You will learn all the seaside history of the city, but also a lot about Maori culture through the presentation of many arts and crafts objects. You will also discover the non-negligible contribution of the Polynesians during the two world wars. The part on the eruption of Mount Tarawera and its aftermath is fascinating.
Be sure to take a walk to the top of the building where a fitted platform offers beautiful views of the city and the lake.

The museum is currently closed for renovation (May 2019). But definitely worth a visit. Alone from the outside it is already an attraction.
