The reservoir Geeste was built in the 1980s as a cooling water basin for the nuclear power plant Emsland twelve kilometers away. Today it is also a recreational area with extensive water sports such as swimming, windsurfing, sailing, diving, etc. The artificial lake is about two kilometers long and at the widest point 1.3 km wide. It is 15 meters higher than the surrounding terrain and there are only a few trees, so hardly covers for the wind and thus good sailing and surfing conditions.
